Yeasts associated with dried-fruit beetles in figs.

چکیده
A species of the bacterial genus Flavobacterium is capable of synthesizing a polysaccharide or mixture of polysaccharides when grown in a medium of a-conidendrin or vanillic acid as a sole carbon source. The polysaccharide hydrolysate consists of D-galactose, D-glucose, D-mannose, D-ribose and L-rhamnose as determined by paper chromatography. This organism has the unique characteristic of growing luxuriantly at the expense of the compounds a-conidendrin and vanillic acid, while little if any growth occurs when the conventional type carbon sources are employed. The temperature range of growth was 5-39.5 C. Candida krusei was able to grow at 46 C. Torulopsis albida was able to grow at 0 C. The sugar tolerance was 50-55O Brix syrup. Saccharomyces ro8ei and Torulopsis lactis-condensi were able to tolerate 600 Brix syrup. Attractivity tests with dried-fruit beetles indicated that they responded most to Candida krusei, then Hanseniaspora valbyensis, fig ti...
متن کاملSouring of Figs by Yeasts and the Transmission of the Disease by Insects^
Souring of the figs was not noticed in the early part of the season, but began later to a limited extent when showers occurred. When the Smyrna figs ripen the ostiolum opens wide and remains open so that a match can easily be inserted and often moderate-sized insects can enter and feed on the sugar. Some of them are caught in the sticky sap and die within the fig. When the figs are ripe and fal...
متن کاملBrewer’s Yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Enhances Attraction of Two Invasive Yellowjackets (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) to Dried Fruit and Fruit Powder
The German yellowjacket, Vespula germanica F., and common yellowjacket, Vespula vulgaris L. (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), are pests of significant economic, environmental, and medical importance in many countries. There is a need for the development and improvement of attractive baits that can be deployed in traps to capture and kill these wasps in areas where they are a problem. Yellowjackets are k...
متن کاملInvasive Japanese beetles facilitate aggregation and injury by a native scarab pest of ripening fruits.
Invasive species' facilitation, or benefiting, of native species is rarely considered in biological invasion literature but could have serious economic consequences should a non-native herbivore facilitate injury by a native pest of high-value crops. Japanese beetle (JB), Popillia japonica, a polyphagous scarab, facilitates feeding by the obligate fruit-feeding native green June beetle (GJB), C...
متن کاملFungal Presence in Selected Tree Nuts and Dried Fruits
Sixty-four tree nut samples (almonds, pecans, pine nuts, and walnuts) and 50 dried fruit samples (apricots, cranberries, papaya, pineapple, and raisins) were purchased from local supermarkets and analyzed for fungal contamination using conventional culture as well as molecular methods. The results of our study showed that the highest yeast and mold (YM) counts (5.34 log10 CFU g(-1)) were found ...
